Helllooooo my friends across the pond :) How are you all? Well I hope!!
So I'm just about settled into the new place and it's pretty dang cool. Tiny but it's really all I need. Oh, and there are 72 stairs up to my apartment and then another 14 up to the bathroom so forget the gym for me! Seriously, this city is ginormous and I walk 4x as much as I did in Boston (that's absurd) and with the number of stairs I do each day, I'm going to be like buns and thighs of steel come September. Watch out!
So the job thing is going alright. I had some training today for a 'work as you wish' style catering place. It's not just catering though... I mean, this company does everything from huge 3,000 person parties with celebrities to movie premiers to the British Soap Opera awards to 8-person dinner parties at ridiculously large mansions in the country. They even have a 10 day event going on in the South of France in July, to which they are flying their staff and setting them up with accommodation, tying them down only until 8pm. The rest of the night is theirs. They also pay for your cabs home if you're working past 11:30. Ok, so I think I'm jumping the gun a little because I will hear back from this place tomorrow - today was basically an audition. They seem to want everyone they can get so my fingers are crossed. By the way, the BEST part about this job is that - when I said 'work as you wish' its really true. You call them, tell them when you want to work that week - anywhere from once a month to once a week to 6 days a week - and you're good to go. That, my friends, is how I want to live my life here this summer! Cross your fingers for me too!
If all else fails though, I do have work at another catering place that does equally cool events but they'll be the ones bugging me to work all the time. (Sigh) haha that's fine... at least all incoming calls on my mobile are free :)
There were some funny little stories I had to tell but I can't remember. Funny little British habits I've noticed... I'll have to make a list and post that next time. One thing is that at cafes, if you buy a pre-packaged sandwich and you want to sit inside and eat it, they charge you more. It's cheaper to get it as 'take-away' which makes absolutely no sense since they're not serving you or giving you plates that they'll have to wash or anything. There aren't very many benches in this town, nor are there many trashcans, so take-away is a pain anyways! Ha, that's one little thing that's bothered me. Alright, time to buy groceries! Yay, no more £3sandwichess from coffee shops!
Talk soon - miss you! :-*
